This takes place in the 1930's and has a great old-gangster feel to a lot of it, without going overboard with respect to cheap cliches. I had listened to a modern times short story about Jack in Many Bloody Returns and enjoyed it, so wanted to check this out. Definitely worth it. Although I'm annoyed that the library has book 1 and than skips to book 6, I'll buy #2 and hope it continues to be just as good. All the characters are well developed, in particular Jack and Escott. And it has just the right amount of danger, action, humor, romance (just a smidge), etc.
One thing in particular I really loved about this book, was the lack of explanation. That sounds bad, but we were learning about what vamps can do (in this world) along with Jack. There was no need for lengthy explanations about why vamps don't like to cross water, or why they need dirt from their home, or why they can mist... because he doesn't know either. And that was fine. He would just describe what was happening and how it felt. I'm sure we'll learn more later about the how's and why's, and I'm excited for that, but for now it was just the right amount.
